Changing Your Hair Color | 4 Questions Answered By The Expert

Here at the salon, we are accustomed to seeing all types of hairstyles and colours, and it is also not a surprise that clients will have doubts or be unsure about a colour treatment. Now for some people, the process is a simple affair. You'll walk into your local hair salon and know what shade you want, but today, we want to help cover some of the most common questions we hear and share them here.

We will skip over the "What is the right hair colour for you" process as they can be for another time; this will be more for those that have not done it before and would like to know what you should be asking yourself or your hairstylist.

What's the Difference Between Semi-Permanent and Permanent?

Even if you're not changing your hair colour, you should know the difference between semi-permanent and permanent textures. It can either wash out or become darker depending on the time you leave a semi-permanent colouring in. Some hair colours remain vibrant for several weeks, while others last for months.

In contrast, permanent hair colour is non-removable and will stay on the hair until it naturally grows out, which means you either get it cut or apply more hair colour to hide those roots.

If you want to change your hair colour to a more natural shade and want the shade to last for several weeks, ask your salon professional about semi-permanent options. Ask about permanent options if you want the new shade to last months instead of weeks.

Which Hair Color Do You Suggest?

Even if you need help determining what colour you want, ask your stylist about what colours might look best on you. Your hairdresser has been working with many clients and knows much about what may work well for each person.

If someone else has already gone to the salon to change their hair colour, they can advise on what worked best. Some people even try to change their hair colour by themselves before going to the salon. This is fine, but we have all seen those videos where things do not always go to plan!

How Long Does A Hair Colour Process Take?

This is subjective because how long a hair colour process takes depends on hair type and length. Some hair colours may take longer than others, but you would have to add in the whole experience, meaning it could take anywhere from 2 to 6 plus hours!

For women who have long hair, the process may feel longer. But be prepared to be sitting for a while, so you have plenty of time to scroll through your social media favourites or read a book/magazine.

Are There Any Colors I Should Avoid?

With this question, you must ask yourself where you stand on the colour spectrum. Changing your hair colour aims to improve your overall appearance, not just to add new colours. So while your friends or family may advise you differently, it will come down to being that you will be rocking that colour for a while, and unless it's winter, you will have to show it off and feel good showing it off.

Some factors that could stop you from reaching a specific colour may be because your hair is too dark or the process might be damaging to your hair. Remember, your stylist has seen it all and, in some instances, might want to recommend colours they like and know will result in the best overall look for you.

Hopefully, you know better what questions you should ask or think about before changing your hair colour. The process can be very simple or complicated, depending on the person and the result they want to achieve.
